New Legislation To Manage Ocean Activities

On 3 September 2012 the Exclusive Economic and Continental Shelf (Environmental Effects) Act 2012 came into force. Its purpose is to fill a gap in New Zealand legislation which currently exists in relation to the management of activities in New Zealand’s oceans beyond 12 nautical miles. The new legislation manages the effects of activities in New Zealand’s oceans. It aims to protect New Zealand oceans from the potential environmental risks posed by activities such as petroleum exploration and development, seabed mining, and marine energy generation.
